By 1900, things were changing in New Orleans: French instruction in schools was fading, the city was fast industrializing, and the Creole elite were losing their prominence as New Orleans neighborhoods diversified with immigrants of all origins.

Kid Ory, as a child, began to make music on homemade instruments. By 1911, he led one of the best-known bands in New Orleans.
